Building Hope, One Home at a Time: Conexus Volunteer Day at BoulderMOD

On May 28th, a Conexus Cares volunteer team had the privilege of participating in a volunteer day at the BoulderMOD factory—a groundbreaking modular housing facility operated by Flatirons Habitat for Humanity in partnership with the City of Boulder and the Boulder Valley School District.

With a team of 13 volunteers, we rolled up our sleeves to contribute to the construction of the very first home to emerge from the BoulderMOD factory. This home is destined to become a permanently affordable residence for a local family, marking a significant milestone in the region’s efforts to address housing affordability.

Hands-On Contributions

Throughout the day, our team engaged in a variety of construction tasks, including:

  • Installing windows and doors.
  • Drywalling and framing
  • Laying subfloors
  • Applying Tyvek house wrap
  • Assisting with other essential building activities

These tasks not only advanced the construction of the home but also provided our team with a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and collaboration involved in building quality housing.

About BoulderMOD

BoulderMOD stands as Colorado’s first modular housing factory dedicated to producing permanently affordable homes. This innovative initiative is a collaborative effort between Flatirons Habitat for Humanity, the City of Boulder, and the Boulder Valley School District.

The factory operates within a 31,375-square-foot facility equipped with nine assembly stations, each designated for specific construction phases such as floor framing, wall setting, and roofing. This setup allows for efficient, high-quality home production while minimizing waste.

A unique aspect of BoulderMOD is its integration with the Boulder Valley School District’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. High school students gain hands-on experience in modern construction methods, working alongside Habitat professionals and volunteers. This approach not only addresses housing needs but also invests in the development of skilled tradespeople for the future.

A Lasting Impact

Participating in the construction of the first home from BoulderMOD was a rewarding experience for our team. It underscored the power of community collaboration in addressing critical issues like housing affordability and workforce development.

We are proud to have contributed to this pioneering project and look forward to supporting future initiatives that build stronger, more resilient communities.
