The RSS team had the pleasure of volunteering with A Precious Child last week.
Together we organized the A Precious Child toy store and gathered wish list gifts to be distributed to local families in need. A Precious Child sets up their own toy store every holiday season through their A Precious Gift program.
The A Precious Gift program collects donated new toys, gift cards and gifts for underserved children (babies through teenagers) in the community. Gifts are then distributed to kids who are the most in need, through APC’s Resource Center and Agency Partners.
For more than 166,000 Colorado children living in poverty, some of the most treasured traditions of childhood are not always an affordable luxury. When keeping the heat on in the dead of winter and having running water take precedents over presents or when a child’s wish list includes things that are needed (like new socks or a toothbrush) rather than items that are desired, it’s no wonder that many children return to school after the break feeling less excitable to arrive to class to show off their new toys to their peers.
The simple act of celebrating each and every child, despite their circumstances, is at the heart of A Precious Gift. Celebrating with their family gives children hope for the future as well as providing a sense of normalcy during difficult times.
